Choose the perfect moving experience by putting your trust in
the capable hands of Spyder Moving + Storage

As the snow melts, it’s that time of the year again to give your home a detailed cleaning. Regardless if you have just finished moving to Hattiesburg MS or lived there for a long time, every home deserves a proper wipe down once a year. The biggest problem people face when it comes to tasks like this is the lack of will and motivation. If you don’t know where to begin your spring cleaning operation, you are not alone. Most people never even begin cleaning simply because they don’t know where to start. However, spring cleaning is much simpler than it may seem at first. To help you out, we have put together a room by room spring cleaning checklist.

Everything is fresh and reborn in the spring, and your home deserves the same

Decluttering and then cleaning each space is as simple as it sounds. The hard part though is starting the job itself. When faced with a big task like this, it’s easy to feel motivated and give up. This is where our checklist comes in. It will outline a set of tasks that will help you declutter and clean every corner of your home. In addition, it will keep you moving from room to room, for maximum efficiency. The traditional advice is to stick to one room until it is fully done, but that tends to consume a lot of precious time. Even though massive cleaning operations are traditionally a spring activity, you can use this list in any season. Before you begin, there are some of the essential supplies you will need:

  • Microfiber cleaning cloths
  • Garbage bags for rubbish disposal
  • Boxes or bags for items that need to be moved elsewhere
  • Furniture and glass cleaners
  • Lint brushes and dusters
  • A vacuum cleaner with attachments

Our room by room spring cleaning checklist starts with the bedrooms

Your goal is to start from the top and work your way down. If you’ve recently moved in with the help of Spyder moving, the bedroom should be functional as soon as possible. So start by vacuuming the ceiling and the walls, and use the brush attachment on your vacuum so you don’t damage the walls. After this, dust all of the closets and nightstands. Pay attention to light switches and doorknobs, since hands frequently come in contact with them. When it comes to mattresses, a thorough airing will do them a world of good. If you can’t carry them outside to air out, opening your windows wide will do the trick. Remove all bedsheets, swing your windows open, and let the room air out. We’d recommend doing this for half an hour to an hour, but if the weather is nice, even a few hours won’t do any harm.

Bedrooms are our own private corner, so we should always take good care of them

After you take all of the sheets off the bed, throw them in the washing machine, and wash them in the order of what goes on the bed first. Start with the mattress pads, and end with the duvet covers and pillowcases, for example. This way, you can put them back on the bed as soon as they are washed, and won’t have to worry about wrinkles. If you’re switching to lighter bed sheets, wash your winter bedding before you store it away. Next, wash all of the mirrors and windows, paying special attention to the drapes. Heavy drapes should be dry cleaned or vacuumed down with an upholstery attachment.

Bathrooms can be germ magnets, so they are next on the list

The next station on our room by room spring cleaning checklist is the bathroom. For them, we are going with a similar approach as we applied to the bedroom. Bathrooms have a priority if you are cleaning before moving in. Vacuum the ceiling and walls, but wipe them down as well. Bathrooms are especially prone to grime if you do not clean them regularly, due to the moisture that cycles through them. However, if you’re giving your home an annual cleaning, you won’t have problems with this. Wipe the walls with an all-purpose cleaner, as it shouldn’t cause harm to painted walls. If you have any throw rugs or bathroom mats laying around, toss them in the washer.

Use strong cleaning products for thoroughly cleaning the bathroom tiles

While the rugs are washing, wipe down the windows and mirrors with a microfiber cloth, since they don’t leave lint behind. Your next step should be to spray and soak all bathroom fixtures. Rub a strong cleaning agent into the walls, sinks, baths, and toilets, and leave it for a while. You can move the rugs from the washer to the dryer at this time. Come back after 15 minutes and rinse everything from the top down, from the showerhead to the floor. Do not use any cloths which you previously used elsewhere in the bathroom without soaking them thoroughly in hot water. Once you finish scrubbing everything down, wipe the floor with a wet mop on your way out.

Our common living areas deserve attention as well

Living rooms, family rooms, and dining rooms are all places where we spend most of the day. So it makes sense that you should give them a proper rundown with a vacuum and cloth. This is all the more important if you’re moving into a furnished home. As always we’re going top to bottom, so start by dusting off those ceiling fans and bookshelves. We recommend an extendable duster which can bend, so you can easily clean high areas. If all you have is a regular duster, a ladder will help you reach those elevated spaces. Wipe down your walls, and then tend to the furniture. Upholstered chairs and sofas get a lot of daily use, yet some people never clean them. Just because a piece of furniture doesn’t look dirty, doesn’t mean there aren’t deep-set stains or dust mites present.

You shouldn’t skip wiping down a room just because it looks clean.

Use a mild furniture cleaner that doesn’t damage the upholstery and give everything a thorough scrub. As insignificant as they may seem, divert your attention to the lightbulbs. A dirty lightbulb emits roughly 20% less light, so give them a wipe with a damp cloth. Most of the dust in our living quarters are attracted to television sets and other appliances due to static. To give your appliances a deep cleaning, spraying compressed air into them can work wonders with getting all that dust outside. For the outside, use antistatic microfiber cloths with a light cleaner. Lift all of your speakers, stereos, screens an computers, and wipe the surfaces below them. After you’re done going through this room by room spring cleaning checklist, everything will look brighter, and you’ll be able to enjoy a fresh, renewed home. Don’t forget to repeat all of the steps next year!
