Self-storage has been one of the fastest-growing sectors of the commercial real estate for the last 40 years. A recent study shows that almost 10% of all Americans rent a self-storage unit. You do the math. Its huge popularity shouldn’t come as a big surprise. After all, extra storage can temporarily solve a number of problematic situations – when you’re moving to Tennessee, or downsizing. It’s like having a spare spacious room at your disposal, 24/7! But if you want to have self-storage service work out beautifully for you, you will have to follow some basic rules. These rules exist for safety reasons. And Rule #1 is that there are specific items that are not allowed in a storage unit.

First and foremost, hazardous materials are never allowed in a storage unit

At the top of the list of nonstorable items is anything that can catch fire or explode:

  • Gasoline,
  • Propane,
  • Oil,
  • Grease,
  • Chemicals,
  • Cleaners, or Paint
  • Fireworks or Explosives.

This category applies to anything toxic or hazardous, such as:

  • biological waste,
  • fertilizer, and
  • asbestos.
  • It also includes anything that is considered an illegal substance and anything radioactive.

Unregistered vehicles:

The only vehicles that can be stored are those that are fully registered, insured, and in operable condition. Anyway else, and you will have to either relocate it or get rid of it once your Cordova movers arrive. This includes anything from boats, to RVs, trailers, motorcycles, cars, and trucks. Anything that you have forgotten to register will not be allowed in a storage unit.

Weapons:

In most cases, and in most states, firearms and ammunition are not permissible in storage rentals. Any reputable local moving company should notify you of this. And if you need additional specifics about these particular items, you can obtain it by contacting the storage company.

Perishables:

This includes food items such as:

  • produce,
  • meats,
  • dairy,
  • cereals and rice,
  • pet food.

These items can attract bugs and rodents, or encourage bacteria or mold.

Living animals and plants are not allowed in a storage unit:

Storage units are not for non-living things. It is illegal for a person to live in a storage rental. Also, animals of any kind are not allowed in a storage unit, as well as plants. You can’t leave anything that would require sunlight, food, and water to live cannot in your storage unit.
