4 Tips That Will Make Moving Easier

the capable hands of Spyder Moving + Storage

It’s safe to assume that there’s just about nobody on this planet that actually enjoys moving. Don’t get us wrong, moving can be a wonderful experience — changing scenery, settling into a fresh property, and chasing new opportunities in life are all experiences that can be majorly impactful. But the actual act of moving? As in, packing up all your junk and transporting it? For most people, it’s absolutely dreadful.

There are some, however, who don’t mind it as much as others, such as our team at Spyder Moving Services. Given that we’ve helped hundreds of people move in and out of Mississippi, we know a thing or two about moving, and there are actually a lot of things you can do to make the process less painful.

Here are some tips you should keep in mind next time you need to move — they will make things far easier than you would have imagined!

Pack Everything Up Before the Move

One of the worst things you can do in a move is to not actually have things packed and ready to go. This causes problems, because one way or another, things will have to be packed if you want to move them. You can’t just throw everything loosely into a truck and go, so if you don’t end up packing beforehand, you’ll have to do it when the move actually happens, and this is problematic for a few reasons.

Why You Shouldn’t Pack on Moving Day

It Helps Your Helpers: It’s fairly standard procedure to recruit some kind of help when you move. Whether it’s professional movers, roommates, relatives, or your entire church congregation, “the more the merrier” generally applies to moving jobs. But if you wait until they all show up to start packing, it’s a huge inconvenience to them. They should be there to help you move objects out from the house and into the truck, not to clean your entire home and organize all of your possessions for you. It’s not like you need to have every last item packed up in a box and sealed shut, but it’s best to have this done beforehand, as it’s something that can be done in advance.

It Prolongs the Move: Another unfortunate consequence to last minute packing is that it makes the entire moving process much lengthier. You don’t want it to last any longer than it needs to, and it’s also respectful to consider the time commitment of the people who help you.

It’s Unorganized: When you pack on moving day, you’re more likely to jump lump things together wherever you find them with no sense of coherent organization. This can be problematic when it’s time to unpack, as you might have no notion where you left important items.

Equipment Preparations

Moving is a whole lot easier when you don’t constantly run into unexpected difficulties. The best moves are ones where everything goes as planned — no emergencies, detours, or misadventures. The best way to avoid these things is to prepare well. Here are some preparations you should consider:

Get the Right Vehicle: One major headache is packing your vehicle, and then realizing that it’s not actually big enough for the job. If it’s a local move and you don’t want to bring a new vehicle into the mix, this ends up causing multiple trips. If it’s a long-distance move, your only option is to recruit a vehicle with more space, which might mean an additional trip to your local U-Haul center, or desperate phone calls to friends and family.

Dollies: Another big headache in moving is the question of transporting large furniture. That master bedroom armoire isn’t going to move itself, and you’d better have a plan in place to get it into the truck, because it’s not something one person can just pick up and bring downstairs. Dollies and hand trucks are more valuable than gold in a moving job, and if you don’t have any, it would be prudent to rent one from your local hardware store.

Straps: You’ll never know how much of a valuable commodity straps can be until you end up needing them for a move and realize you don’t have them. Straps make it far easier to secure things so they’re safe and sound inside a moving truck or trailer. You won’t regret having a sizeable collection of these ready before you move.

Prepare Your Body

No matter which way you look at it, moving is a pretty physically taxing process. In addition to all the time and energy you’ve already spend packing everything, you’re bound to break a sweat as you take countless trips back and forth from your home, lifting large objects. Here are some easy preparations you can make so that it will be easier on your body:

Eat Well Before the Move: You’ll want as much energy as your body can spare, so we advise against taking a family trip to Olive Garden and loading up on fettuccine alfredo before your move. Instead, go with something healthier, such as rich proteins and vegetables before you move. You don’t want to be lifting things all day while you feel bogged down or sick from junk food.

Don’t do Intense Workouts a Day or Two Before: Moving is a job that tests your upper body, back, and legs. You’ll feel the burn in your arms and back as you carry heavy objects or boxes, and you’ll feel it in your legs as you constantly bend down to pick things up (remember, lift with your legs, not your back!). What certainly won’t make this process easier is having sore muscles before the day even starts — something that can happen if you did a hard workout in the days leading up to the move. Ensure that your muscles are well-rested.

Sleep Well: The last thing that can be the bane of your moving experience is a lack of sleep. This fatigues your body immensely and makes you far less capable when you’re performing intensive physical tasks. Rest well the night before your move — you’re going to need it!

Get Help

Finally, the best way to make moving easier is to get help. While friends and family are a viable option, the best assistance you can get is help from professional movers.

As professional movers ourselves in the Oxford area, we make it our goal to make the move as easy and painless as possible for our clients, and there are countless moves we’ve helped with that would have been far more strenuous if we hadn’t been summoned.

The best part about hiring a moving company is that most of the items on this list take care of themselves. You won’t have to worry about procuring equipment, since we’ll bring everything you need. You won’t have to worry about your back, because we’ll do the heavy lifting. We want to help in every way possible.
